Q&A with Justin Lyons
PRS: You’ve been touring in support of Machine Gun Kelly for some time now. What’s been your most memorable gig with MGK?
Justin: I believe the most remarkable performance with the crew would have to be at Red Rocks, or perhaps Madison Square Garden. The experience of having a sold-out show in the iconic garden is truly unparalleled. Playing at Red Rocks was also an incredible experience, performing to the heavens under the open sky and being surrounded by an abundance of star power.
PRS: Prior to MGK, you had stints with major K-pop acts Blackpink & BigBang. Are you a K-pop fan yourself?
Justin: I really love K-pop! I wouldn't say that I'm a die-hard fan, but I'm pretty knowledgeable about the inner workings of the K-pop industry. I must say, I absolutely adore the music and the culture, especially when I compare it to how things are done in the US. It's just so impressive!
PRS: When did you initially encounter the PRS brand, and do you remember the first time you played one of our guitars?
Justin: I first came across the PRS brand in 2007 when I acquired my initial SE model during the time when GC offered them for a price of $599. The SE models available at that time boasted a rather angular design, but I must say that I am quite fond of the more recent SE models. It was in mid-2011 that I had my first encounter with a Custom 24, thanks to a gracious friend who purchased one for me. This experience truly transformed both my musical journey and my overall outlook on such a remarkable instrument.
PRS: What do you love the most about your PRS guitars in general?
Justin: Oh, man! Let me tell you, I am totally obsessed with the tone that the PRS guitar produces. But what I absolutely adore about this guitar is how it brings out this irresistible charm in my performance. I mean, its style, those sleek curves, and the amazing craftsmanship. It all adds up to this incredible sexiness that perfectly complements me. It's like a match made in heaven! You know what I always say, "When you look good, you feel good!"
PRS: You’ve currently got quite a unique gig with the Dallas Mavericks, opening games with a one-man show on the court itself. How did this opportunity present itself?
Justin: It all started with an initial thought. My good friend "Tee" came up with an idea to have me perform the national anthem for the Dallas Stars, which led to an opportunity for me to do the same for the Mavs during their regular season home game. As the NBA playoffs approached, news spread about my producing skills, and I was approached to revamp the Dallas Mavericks intro.
PRS: We understand that the Maverick’s theme song you’ve been performing has an interesting history behind it. What’s the story?
Justin: The iconic song "Eminence Front" by the legendary band The Who has been a longstanding fixture in the Mavericks' history for a remarkable 23 years. Throughout this time, no individual or force has been able to infuse it with the necessary dynamism to reignite the spirits of both the players and the fans. The opportunity to breathe new life and vigor into this song was a career-defining moment that I eagerly anticipated. I am eternally grateful to the Mavericks organization for entrusting me with this task.
